Trinidad and Tobago's National Security Minister Jack Warner has resigned over alleged involvement in "fraudulent management" of the CONCACAF soccer confederation, reports reaching said Monday.
Warner, former president of CONCACAF, did not report to the regional body, which represents soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean, or the international soccer organization FIFA that a 25.9-million-U.S. dollar Center of Excellence in Trinidad had been built on land owned by his companies.
"Approximately 26 million U.S. dollars of CONCACAF funds went to the Center of Excellence and that is no longer an asset of CONCACAF," David Simmons, head of the group's Integrity Committee, said in a report.
However, Warner dismissed the report as being malicious and baseless. He tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar late Sunday.
On Monday, Warner also resigned as chairman of the United National Congress, the main political party in the current four-party coalition that now governs the twin-islands Caribbean state.
Persad-Bissessar, who had been under pressure to fire Warner from the cabinet, appointed Works and Infrastructure Minister Emmanuel George as the new national security minister.
