Three out of every five Costa Ricans believe President Laura Chinchilla's government is doing a lousy job, according to a poll published by local daily La Nacion Monday in the capital San Jose.

The survey by polling firm Unimer from June 4 to 13 gives Chinchilla's government the worst grades of the past six presidential administrations, with 60 percent of those polled rating it as "bad or very bad."

In its 23 years of polling, no president has ever before registered a 60 percent negative rating, Unimer said, though former president Jose Maria Figueres came close with 57 percent in 1995.

Only 9 percent of those surveyed gave Chinchilla's government a "good" rating, while the remaining 31 percent said it was only " regular."

Chinchilla's government, which came to power in 2012, got its highest ratings in the first six months, with 41 percent approval and 9 percent disapproval.

At present, an overwhelming 96 percent of those queried said Chinchilla does not have control of the direction her government is taking, versus 2 percent who said she did.
