At least six people died in a stampede early Sunday morning during a police operation inside a night club , police sources said.

Luis Eduardo Martinez, Bogota's Police Commander, said that the police received a call at 5:00 a.m.(1000 GMT) but "when they arrived at the site, they were not allowed to go inside." About 180 people inside the club, located in southern Bogota, tried to go out through a small door, which left five women and one man dead.

According to local media, there was a fight in the night club and someone called the police.

The police used excessive force, allegedly using tear gas and blocking the exit to prevent the people from getting out, some witnesses said.

Meanwhile, the owner of the club said the police used tear gas inside the club, which caused panic among the people.

Bogota's Public Prosecutor's Office ordered an investigation conducted by 25 agents to figure out what happened and find out those responsible.

Martinez also said the office will determine if the police made excessive use of force.

According to Bogota's Metropolitan Police, previously the club had been closed four times for defaulting regulations.

In Twitter, Gustavo Petro, Mayor of Bogota, criticized the police action.

"It is unbelievable that more people were killed during a police intervention, than if the police had not intervened. There were failures in the intervention methods," Petro wrote.
