U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday offered condolences over the loss of life and property in the Philippines done by Super Typhoon Haiyan, offering more assistance in relief efforts in the Southeast Asian nation.

"(First Lady) Michelle and I are deeply saddened by the loss of life and extensive damage done by Super Typhoon Yolanda," the president said in a statement, using another name of the super typhoon.

"The United States is already providing significant humanitarian assistance, and we stand ready to further assist the government's relief and recovery efforts," he added.

Haiyan hit the Philippines on Friday and Saturday. An estimated 10,000 people in central Philippine province of Leyte might have been killed, local media reported on Sunday.
