Brazil is prepared to ensure the security of both Brazilians and visitors during the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup games, President Dilma Rousseff said Tuesday.

In an interview with a local newspaper, the president said Brazil has invested heavily in defense and is fully capable of handling security in the 12 cities hosting games during the June to July event.

"Brazil is prepared to ensure the safety of its citizens and of visitors," the president said, adding "federal government spending on security has amounted to 1.9 billion reals (791 million U.S. dollars)."

Rousseff detailed the government's actions on security, saying they include "setting up integrated command and control centers in all host cities, strengthening port infrastructure, acquiring equipment to boost safety on highways and to centralize security operations, and integrating communications between local and federal institutions."

Rousseff repeated her earlier pledge that Brazil will organize "the World Cup of World Cups," as well as the best Olympic Games to date, when the country hosts the 2016 summer games Rio.

"Our arms are open to receive, in the best possible manner, with hospitality, comfort and security, the visitors, athletes and professionals who will participate in the World Cup and Olympic Games," Rousseff said.

Such large-scale sporting events offer Brazil the opportunity to increase investment, said Rousseff, whose government has come under fire for spending billions on the games, while basic public services, including urban transit, health care and education, remain under funded.
