Myanmar's largest anti-government ethnic armed group -- Kayin National Union (KNU) reached a peace agreement with the government in Hpa-an, capital of southeastern Kayin state, Thursday, according to official sources.

The signing signified a major achievement made by the government in succeeding previous governments' peace efforts in settlement of the rebellious armed group issues since independence in 1948.

The ceasefire agreement was signed between the 19-member peace- making group of KNU, led by Army Chief of Staff General Mutue Sae Poe, and with the government's peace-making group at central level, headed by Minister of Rail Transportation U Aung Min, the official sources said.
