Thai gov't urged to form charter drafting assembly
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-29 17:46

Thai government should expedite amendment of the Article 291 of the current constitution to open way for the setting up of the charter drafting assembly (CDA), former acting leader of the now defunct Thai Rak Thai Party Chaturon Chaisaeng said on Sunday.

Chaturong said the CDA should be successfully formed before the end of the current parliamentary session, or about three months from now, otherwise the constitution revamp would not be completed in one year as the Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had declared, website Bangkok Post reported.

Chaturong was a former member and acting leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party which was dissolved in 2007 due to an accused election fraud. As a result, he was banned from politics for five years but will be able to return in May this year.

According to Chaturong, the government should focus solely on changing the Article 291 to get the CDA to consider change in the charter to make it more democratic.
