Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-04 12:47

Myanmar Ministry of Information will cooperate with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in drafting a media law, local official media reported Saturday.

The ministry is drafting the media law in accord with the constitutional provisions and based on international and regional norms and standards, said the New Light of Myanmar.

Under the cooperation between the ministry and UNESCO, a discussion on the media role that can guarantee press freedom, responsibility and accountability in promoting democracy will be held.

Moreover, a workshop on printing and television laws will be held under the collaboration between the personnel of the ministry and ICT experts from UNESCO.

Meanwhile, jointly organized by Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association (MWJA) and Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMIC) of Singapore, the first ever workshop on media development in democratic society involving the participation of eight countries -- Indonesia, host Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United States was also held here last Monday.

The workshop discussed media-related laws and publication.

The ongoing third session of Myanmar's two-house parliament is to discuss bill on printing press and publication law among others, according to official sources.

Since the assumption of office of the new government in March 2011, it has eased some restrictions on media among its reform measures.
