Myanmar held the first ever workshop on media development in democratic society in Yangon Monday involving the participation of eight countries -- Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United States.

Jointly organized by Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association (MWJA) and Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMIC) of Singapore, the two-day workshop is aimed at developing Myanmar's media sector, General Secretary of the MWJA U Ko Ko told the participants.

The workshop discussed media-related laws and publication.

Government representative U Tint Swe from the Ministry of Information read at the session paper on current policy on drafting media law.

Meanwhile, the ongoing third session of Myanmar's two-house parliament is to discuss bill on printing press and publication law among others, according to official sources.

Since the assumption of office of the new government in March 2011, it has eased some restrictions on media among its reform measures.
