Myanmar to raise health, education budgets for 2012-13

Myanmar's new government will raise state budget for health and education for the fiscal year of 2012- 13 and the budget bills are being submitted to the ongoing union parliament session for discussions and adoption, local media reported Monday.

Quoting Minister of Finance and Revenue U Hla Tun, the Weekly Eleven News said 367.970 billion Kyats (456.21 million U.S. dollars) state budget is earmarked for the health sector for the year 2012-13, about four times that of the previous year, while 617.214 billion Kyats for the education sector, about two times correspondingly.

The projected increase of respective budget will enable employment of more staff, reinforcement of equipment and renovation of sectoral infrastructure respectively, the report said.

Percentage speaking, the budget bill for health for 2012-13 is proposed at 2.93 percentof the total budget, up from 1.3 percent, while that for education is at 4.91 percent, up from 4.13 percent correspondingly.

However, the budget bill for defense is lowered to 14.94 percent from 23.6 percent.

National Planning Bill (2011-12), National Planning Bill (2012- 13), Supplementary Union Budget Allocation Bill (2012) and Union Budget Bill (2012-13) are being under discussions at the parliament which began on Jan. 31 in Nay Pyi Taw.

The third session of the union parliament, attended by 588 parliament members, is a follow-up of that of the two houses -- House of Representative and House of Nationalities which commenced on Jan. 26 to continue discussing remaining bills submitted to the two houses by parliament members.

During the last second parliament session, held from Aug. 22, 2010 to Nov. 25, 2011, a total of 15 bills were passed and endorsed by the president to become laws.
