Thai PM, army chief downplay "red-shirt" leader's coup allegation
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-09 18:04

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatr Thursday played down allegation by anti-establishment " Red-shirt" leader that another coup is being planned to topple the Pheu Thai-led government.

Earlier, Red-shirt leader and Pheu Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan said he received report that there would be a coup in April and that he called on red-shirt supporters to be ready for street protest against coup makers.

Prime Minister Yingluck said it was more likely Jatuporn's comments were intended only as a deterrent and that she had not got any report about a possible coup.

She said that since the leaders of the armed forces had repeatedly confirmed there would not be a coup, everybody should rest assured that it would not happen.

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck's elder brother, was toppled by a military coup in 2006. The coup led to the creation of Red-shirt movement.

"Mr. Jatuporn, in making such remarks, might only want to pre- empt it from happening. Since everyone has given assurances that will not happen, this matter should be put to an end," Bangkok Post quoted the prime minister as saying.

Asked whether she would rebuke Jatuporn, Yingluck said it is Jatuporn's right to express his opinion.

Also on Thursday, Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said he has not received any report of a coup.

"I've told you [reporters] that I've never obtained this kind of report. Who will stage a coup? Who'are the soldiers to stage a coup? You guys tell me who. [I] insists that we have never obtained that kind of information," Gen Prayuth said.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said Jatuporn should keep quiet.

According to the Bangkok Post, the defense minister said he had repeatedly said there would not be a coup because "nobody wanted to do it."
