Newly appointed Maldivian President is given an ultimatum to stop cracking down of opposition party supporters throughout the Indian oceans archipelago, former president said.
Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed who is said to have overthrown by a military coup said on Friday that the government under newly appointed President Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan should stop violence against his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members within next 24 hours.
"If this is not stopped I will go to the islands starting from worst affected atoll Adddu," Nasheed said.
Nasheed said his supporters in the atoll of Addu are being arrested, attacked with pepper and beaten up by police. "We cannot let this situation to be continued. If they cannot stop arresting and beating people up I think we have to make a representation for them," former president said.
He claimed that the military had gone to some islands to crack down people with arms and ammunitions. He said according to reports on Friday, military and police were ransacking homes and people in Addu while similar incidents we reported from other islands as well.
MDP earlier announced that nearly 500 of its supporters have been arrested on Wednesday's attack on police stations and other buildings.
Following Nasheed's disclosure that he was overthrown by a police and military coup, thousands of his supporters took to streets in Male on Wednesday while others in atoll islands went on burning down police stations and court houses. In the atoll of Addu, all police stations and a police training building together with vehicles were burnt down by Nasheed's loyalists. |
