Indian PM holds high-level meeting on 2G license cancellations
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-12 15:07

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday held a high-level ministerial meeting over the cancellation of 112 licenses for 2G spectrum by the country's Supreme Court in the wake of the telecom scam.

The Supreme Court last week canceled all the 122 licenses of 2G spectrum granted by former telecom minister A Raja, saying they were issued in a "totally arbitrary and unconstitutional" manner.

Indian Finance Minister Paranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal and Law Minister Salman Khurshid attended the meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.

"This meeting was to inform senior ministers as to what are the implications and ramifications of the judgment. This group was not meant to take any decision," Sibal told the media after the meeting in the national capital.

"The Telecom Secretary gave a full presentation on what the judgment is about, what it means and when we move forward. Ultimately all the matters have to go to the cabinet so the government has to be informed before that in order to take a decision," the Telecom Minister said.

The former Telecom Minister, A. Raja, is currently in jail for his alleged role in the 40 billion US dollars telecom scam in which at least seven top corporate honchos have also been accused by the country's premier probe agency.
