Oppositions to continue mass rally despite India's intervention
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-17 13:09

Oppositions led by former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed is to continue a mass rally on Friday despite India's last-minute request to reconsider the move so as to resolve the political crisis in this Indian ocean island nation.

A lawmaker from Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Imthiyaz Fahmy told Xinhua that the protest would continue "in full speed despite last night's attempts to reach a settlement for an early election."

"This is a free-arranged protest and we cannot stop even though we tried to reconsider till late last night," Fahmy said. Nasheed planned to address the media last night but it was canceled.

Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai rushed to the Maldives to intervene the deepening political crisis. He proposed to the new government for an early election while requesting Nasheed to reconsider Friday's protest which was feared to lead to clashes between police and protesters.

MDP also objected to the roadmap proposed by the government, which promised an early election with a constitutional change. "It is not necessary to have a constitution amendment for an early election. It would take a long time and this is to drag this on," Fahmy said.

The road map, released last night, called for all parties to avoid violence while promising the government will ensure security forces to exercise restraint against peaceful protesters.

Thousands of MDP supporters from atolls outside Male are to attend the rally which also aims to show the strength of Nasheed who demands for an election in two months.

The Maldives undergoes a political turmoil since Nasheed stepped down after three weeks of opposition-led protests. Later he said he was forced to resign under threats of violence from rebel police and army officers. He vows to continue street fights until his Vice President Mohamed Waheed HUssain Manik who replaced him step down and an early election is held.
