Indian crime investigation body urged to probe killing of 2 communist party leaders
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-23 22:43

A petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court Thursday, demanding that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing of two leaders of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

The petition said there were inconsistencies in the causes given by various quarters of the West Bengal government in the killings of Pradip Tah, who earlier represented Burdwan North in the assembly, and the party's district committee member Kamal Gayen.

"We filed a writ petition before the high court demanding a CBI probe in the matter. There are inconsistencies in the reasons given by the authorities on different occasions about the killings. We have also prayed for payment of compensation for the victims," said advocate Subrata Mukherjee.

"While chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the killings were a result of infighting in the CPI-M, some of her ministers said the leaders were killed by the public who were enraged by their anti- social activities. A high ranked police officer has said the killings are a result of clash between two rival political parties, " he noted.

He said the administration's discrepancies are sure to infringe upon the investigation and it was essential the matter be probed by the CBI under the jurisdiction of the Calcutta High Court.

The writ also seeks the court's intervention in refraining lawmakers and other senior government officials from publicly commenting on any issue which is under investigation.

The two CPI-M leaders were killed in a clash Wednesday. While the Left Front blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress, Banerjee linked the deaths to infighting within the CPI-M.
