Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-02 15:53

South Korea's defense ministry has distributed guidelines for responding to the alleged bioterrorism threats posed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a ruling party lawmaker said Friday.

The ministry sent out the 130-page long guidelines on responses to bioterrorism and subsequent medical support to all military units, Song Young-sun of the ruling Saenuri Party said in a statement.

The guidelines, the first of its kind to be drawn up by the ministry, also offer detailed explanation on 13 bioterrorism agents the DPRK is believed to possess in large amounts, including anthrax, plagues and smallpox, Song said.

"There is an urgent need to develop additional vaccines against bioterrorism," the lawmaker said.

Since 2010, South Korean and U.S. forces have conducted joint drills aimed at detecting, identifying and neutralizing chemical and biological weapons the DPRK possess.
