Volunteer slain in Thai deep south
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-19 17:51

A village protection volunteer was shot dead on Monday in the latest violence in Thailand's restive southern province of Pattani.

The 43-year-old victim was attacked by two gunmen early Monday morning when he was on patrol in Yaring district.

The assailants on a motorcycle shot him and stole the victim's pistol before escaping the scene.

More than 5,200 persons, mostly civilians, have been killed since resurgence of the insurgency-related violence in 2004 in the three Muslim-majority provinces which were once part of the Sultanate of Pattani.

The cabinet last Tuesday approved further extension of the emergency decree in the three southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala from March 20 to May 19 to facilitate the authorities' operations in the insurgency-prone areas.
