India becomes world largest weapons buyer
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-22 20:52

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has released a report naming India as the world largest buyer of military weapons.

Almost a tenth of the world's weapons are now sold to India. Their defense budget is now close to 40 billion US dollars.

As a new emerging economy, India's military has been modernizing fast over the past several years. Last year, India announced plans to purchase 126 French fighter jets, Russian aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and advanced helicopters.

India's neighbors are suspicious of this build-up.

In Pakistan, media say "the increase in the military budget might convey a wrong message to neighbouring countries, reminding people of the tensions in South Asia."
