South Korea will set stricter standards for permissible levels of radioactive cesium in food imports from Japan starting April amid lingering concerns over the safety of Japanese food after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said Thursday.
The administration said it will lower the acceptable level of radioactive cesium in all Japanese imports from the current 370 becquerels per kg to 100 starting April.
Changes will also be made to the cesium limits for milk and beverages. The limit for milk will be reduced to 50 becquerels per kg, while the limit for beverages will drop to 10, according to the KFDA.
South Korea temporarily suspended imports of 20 food products, including spinach and mushrooms, from seven prefectures after a tsunami in March 2011 triggered the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdowns. |
