S.Korea, U.S. say DPRK's planned rocket launch breaches UN ban
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-06 15:50

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and a visiting U.S. congressional delegation agreed Friday the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s planned rocket launch violates a United Nations ban.

The five-member Republican delegation, including senators Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Richard Burr of North Carolina, arrived here for a three-day visit involving meetings with Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and a visit to the heavily fortified border area with the DPRK.

During the meeting, Lee and the Congressmen agreed that the DPRK's plan to launch a satellite mounted on a rocket later this month is a "clear violation" of U.N. resolutions, according to the presidential Cheong Wa Dae.

They also agreed the move will "seriously damage" a food aid deal between Washington and Pyongyang, in which the latter halts nuclear and missile tests, the Cheong Wa Dae said.

While the DPRK claims the launch will abide by international norms and blasts its critics for continuing "hostile policy" toward Pyongyang, South Korea and the United States see the move as a plan to test a long-range missile that could possibly carry nuclear weapons.

South Korea is considering shooting down a rocket if it strays into the South Korean territory, despite the DPRK's threat of " merciless punishment" for such attempts.
