Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and other three ministers have examined a report provided by the Kansai Electric Power Co. on resuming the Oi nuclear power plant and confirmed the resumption is basically safe, local media reported.

KEPCO, one of the major electric utility companies in Japan providing power to Kansai area, the second largest industrial area in Japan, submitted a medium and long-term timetable about security strategies and implementation plan on restarting the Oi nuclear power plant to the government on Monday.

Noda held a meeting with Industry Minister Yukio Edano, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura and Nuclear Disaster Minister Goshi Hosono to preliminarily deliberate the report. They confirmed that the restarting plan basically meet the safety standard. Edano said the government will have further discussions on the report after the meeting.

According to the KEPCO's report, if the reactor could not restart, Kansai area would face a power deficit up to 19.3 percent in peak hours this summer.

The No.3 nuclear reactor of Tomari nuclear power plant in Hokkaido is the only operating reactor out of Japan's 54 commercial reactors since the Fukushima nuclear disaster happened last year, but the reactor will be suspended until May due to security checks.

If the government confirms the security and necessity of the resumption, Edano will pay a visit to Fukui Prefecture where the Oi nuclear power plant locate to explain the situation to the government and seek support for the restarting plan, said local media.
