India says 7 ceasefire violations recorded on Kashmir LoC since Jan. 201
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-27 16:58
Seven ceasefire violations were recorded by the Indian government since Jan. 2012 on line of control (LoC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a Government spokesman said Friday.

The information was given by Indian Defence Minister A K Antony in a written statement to the upper house of Indian parliament on Thursday.

"The minister said seven ceasefire violations took place on LoC this year, however no casualty was reported in these violations," the spokesman said.

Last year 51 ceasefire violations were recorded on LoC, while in 2010 the number of such violations was 44.

LoC is a de facto border dividing Kashmir into Indian and Pakistani controlled parts. The area is heavily mined with anti- personnel mines. Indian army fenced LoC in 2004 to stop infiltrators from sneaking into their side.

Antony also stated the activities across LoC are under surveillance.

"All activities across the LoC are continuously monitored," the spokesman quotes Antony as saying. "In addition, measures like strengthening of defences, deployment, redeployment of troops, infrastructure development and military modernization are factored into our plans."

Indian army officials say most of the times ceasefire violations on LoC are being carried out by Pakistani troops to infiltrate militants into Indian-controlled parts.

A guerrilla war is also going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
