Japan has disposed of 12.3 percent of the debris from the March 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster in the three most heavily destroyed prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima as of Monday, Environment Minister Goshi Hosono said on Tuesday.
The progress has been made thanks to recycling efforts made in various regions, Hosono told a news conference.
An estimation of 22.5 million tons of debris has been created from all three disaster-hit prefectures.
The disposal percentage as of Monday was 11.7 percent in Iwate, 12.9 percent in Miyagi and 8.5 percent in Fukushima. Debris disposal of Fukushima has made less progress due to radioactive contamination from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. |
