Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-09 12:54
A major Shan ethnic party -- the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), led by U Khun Tun Oo, has obtained approval from the Union Election Commission for reformation, official media the New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.

The reformation grant came nearly four months after the party leader U Khun Tun Oo was released among the 651 prisoners under President U Thein Sein's fourth amnesty order in January which was aimed mainly at enabling them to take part in national reconciliation and political process.

U Khun Tun Oo, along with 9 other Shan ethnic political figures , were detained in February 2005 on charge of forming organization that head for "disintegration" of the country and "destruction" of then government's seven-step roadmap to democracy.

He was sentenced to 93 years' term of prison.

The SNLD stood the second winning party after the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, in the 1990 general election.

SNLD, along with NLD, rejected to re-register for the Nov.7, 2010, general election and was also absent from running the last by-elections held on April 1 for lack of time for preparation as reported.
