Indian gov't freezes accounts of 30 NGOs over violation of law

The Indian government has frozen accounts of 30 NGOs and banned 70 other voluntary organizations from receiving foreign contribution following allegation of violation of laws, reported local daily The Times of India electronic edition Wednesday.

Indian minister of state for home Mullappally Ramachandran told Rajya Sabha, or upper house of parliament, that 24 such cases have been referred to Central Bureau of Investigation, while seven other cases have been given to state police for investigation.

"Accounts of 30 NGOs have been frozen, 35 NGOs have been placed in prior permission category and 70 NGOs have been prohibited from receiving foreign contribution," he was quoted as saying.

The minister said a total of 99 billion rupees (1.86 billion U. S. dollars) was received as foreign contribution by various non- governmental organizations in 2007-08 period and 110 billion rupees (2.07 billion U.S. dollars) received as foreign contribution by the NGOs in 2008-09 period of time.

The government has accused some foreign groups of backing protests against nuclear plant projects in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
