India's flagship carrier Air India Sunday cancelled at least 20 international flights originating from the national capital and Mumbai with the pilots' strike entering its sixth day, a spokesperson said.
"Air India has cancelled 20 international flights from Mumbai and New Delhi. Some 200 pilots have reported sick for the sixth consecutive day. The airline management has sacked 71 pilots so far," he said.
Despite the sacking, pilots are refusing to bulge and had even urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to end the crisis, arising out of promotion policy and the rescheduling of training of Boeing dreamliner which the airline is to acquire.
Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has appealed to the striking pilots to return to work and apologize to passengers who are having a harrowing time. "We are ready to talk but the pilots must call off their strike," he said.
The airline has, meanwhile, suspended bookings for international flights till May 15. |
