S. Korea's leftist UPP forms emergency committee amid infighting
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-16 17:05
South Korea's left-wing minor party, beset by factional feuds over a vote-rigging scandal, formed an ad hoc committee Wednesday in an attempt to salvage itself.

The Unified Progressive Party (UPP) was thrown into disarray following revelations during the party primary for the April general elections, where the fledgling party won 13 seats in the 300-member parliament.

The controversy, which pushed the four co-leaders of the party to resign en masse, sparked infighting among rival factions that observers say further delegitimized the party in the eyes of the public.

"Given the urgency of the situation, the emergency committee will immediately start activities on reforming the party," Kang Ki- kap, who currently heads the committee, said during a press conference.

He also pledged to look into a violent clash involving hundreds of party members last Sunday.

The leftist party was founded less than a year ago through a merger among three progressive parties. Its new-found status as the third largest party in the parliament was considered a major success.
