S. Korea's leading presidential contender sues opposition leader for libel
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-22 16:53
A leading presidential candidate of South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party sued an opposition rival for libel over allegations of her involvement in a savings bank scandal, local media reported Tuesday.

Park Geun-hye, former Saenuri leader considered the strongest contender for the December presidential election, is accusing the floor leader of the main opposition Democratic United Party, Park Jie-won, of linking her to a now-jailed lobbyist for the Busan Savings Bank.

The opposition heavyweight said last week Park met with the lobbyist several times, implying she could have been lobbied to help salvage the now-suspended savings bank.

Calling the allegation a "negative campaign" against her, the Saenuri presidential front-runner also sued two of the co-hosts of political satire podcast show "Naneun Ggomsuda," or "I'm a weasel, " for making similar claims on the program.

The lobbyist, Park Tae-kyu, was jailed last year for bribing politicians and key government officials.
