Mongolia pushing various programs to protect environment
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-14 19:50

Mongolia is carrying out a series of projects to improve its vulnerable environment, Environment Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar said Thursday.

The programs, including rallies, seminars, exhibitions and training courses, are intended not only to improve the country's natural environment but to promote public environmental awareness, the minister said at a press conference.

As regards the earlier drying-up of some sections of the Tuul river, the most important domestic water source for residents in the country's capital, an expert at the press conference said the situation was caused by continuous drought in the upper reaches of the river.

The expert added that reduced vegetation along the river caused by increasing human activities also contributed to the process.

Mongolia has been hit hard by global climate change, and currently some 78 percent of its territory has turned into desert or semidesert.
