India Sunday defended the country's pledge of 10 billion U.S. dollars to the International Monetary Fund to help resolve the Eurozone crisis.
''There is nothing wrong in contributing to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The money will be used only if needed and will also remain as part of India's reserves,'' Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, brushing aside opposition parties' claim that the pledge came at a time when the country's economy is in a shambles.
The prime minister also said that he consulted the leaders of other BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations before announcing the country's contribution at the recently concluded G20 summit in Mexico.
All the BRICS nations have pledged to contribute 75 billion U.S. dollars to the IMF to bailout the European Union nations crippled by financial crisis. |
