South Korea's new parliament elected ruling Saenuri Party lawmaker Kang Chang-hee as the speaker at its first session on Monday.
Kang, a six-term lawmaker who formerly served in the military, won 195 votes out of 283 cast, becoming the parliamentary speaker for the next two years.
He is known for his close ties to Park Geun-hye, the former Saenuri leader seen as the strongest presidential contender in the conservative camp.
Under parliamentary law, Kang will now act as an independent lawmaker. The ruling party is now left with 149 seats in the 300- member parliament. |
