Southern Indian state gets new Chief Minister
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-12 20:38

The southern Indian state of Karnataka Thursday got a new Chief Minister, Jagadish Shettar, just days after Sadananda Gowda resigned from the post in the country's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled state.

Shettar, the 56-year-old new Chief Minister, was sworn into office by Karnataka Governor K.K. Bharadwaj, along with 33 new Ministers, including two Deputy Chief Ministers.

He is BJP's third Chief Minister in Karnataka in a little over four years.

In fact, Shettar was nominated by BJP as the new Chief Minister following the exit of Gowda last Sunday after remaining at the state's helm for nearly 11 months.

Experts say Gowda's resignation had marked the end of a bitter feud between him and another former Chief Minister B.S. Yedurappa who pressurized the BJP top brass to replace Gowda who was in fact hand-picked by him.

Yedurappa was compelled to leave office after nearly three years in the wake of corruption allegations against him.

Shettar is a foe-turned-friend of Yedurappa, a strongman in Karnataka politics.
