100 arrested over rioting in India's largest car maker plant near capital
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-19 21:32

Indian police Thursday arrested nearly 100 workers of the country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki's plant in Manesar near Gurgaon, 50 kms from the national capital, in connection with rioting on Wednesday night in which a senior company official was killed and 50 others, including two Japanese officials, sustained injuries, a government minister said.

"We have rounded up 100 workers for the violent clashes between factory workers and management personnel. They have been arrested for various charges including murder, attempt to murder and destruction of property," Haryana Industry Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala told media.

Meanwhile, the charred body of the senior company official killed during the violence at the plant has been identified as that of Awanish Kumar Dev, general manager of Human Resources.

Even as the Maruti workers and management blamed each other for the unrest at the Manesar plant, sources said the violence was actually sparked by a scuffle over suspension of an employee following a heated exchange of words, which brought to light labor problems in the plant.

Maruti Suzuki India's factory, which makes 550,000 vehicles a year and accounts for around a third of Maruti's total output and controlled by Japanese car maker Suzuki, said the Manesar plant has been shut down.

"The police have taken charge of the premises," Maruti Suzuki Spokesman Puneet Dhawan said.
