India orders blocking of 250 websites over doctored images
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-20 21:05

India has ordered the blocking of over 250 websites which it claims uploaded doctored video clips on the internet showing alleged atrocities on religious minorities in the northeastern state of Assam, which sparked the mass exodus of people of the northeastern region from the southern cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad over the past few weeks, sources said Monday.

"Some 130 websites have been blocked already. We will block the rest soon," the Home Ministry sources said.

India suspects aPakistan-based hardline group for the mischief.

"Investigation has revealed that a bulk of the incendiary images were first uploaded on blogs in Pakistan. I am sure they will deny it, but we have fairly accurate technical evidence to show that the images originated and circulated from their territory," Indian Home Secretary R.K. Singh had told the media late Saturday evening in the national capital. The Home Secretary had said that the doctored images were meant to incite religious riots in India. Pakistan has denied the claims and said it would act if India could give concrete evidence.

Thousands of people of the northeastern India have fled from the southern cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad in the past few weeks following rumors of possible attacks on them in the aftermath of alleged attacks on minority Muslims in the northeastern state of Assam recently.

Some 75 people were killed and over 400,000 displaced following religious violence in Assam between illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and local Bodo community recently.
