Indian Parliament adjourned over opposition insistence on PM's resignation
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-23 14:52

Both houses of Indian Parliament were adjourned for the third consecutive day Thursday as the opposition demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on the allocation of coal blocks.

As soon as the Lok Sabha or Lower House of Parliament met at 11: 00 a.m., the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members refused to allow the proceedings and rushed towards Speaker Meira Kumar's podium raising slogans, forcing the house to be adjourned till noon.

Similar scenes were seen in the Rajya Sabha, or Upper House of Parliament, forcing Chairperson Hamid Ansari to adjourn the house till 12.

India's official auditor last week revealed that the lack of transparency in the allocation of coal blocks to private players resulted in a loss of a whopping 37 billion U.S. dollars.
