India Sunday successfully launched its 100th space mission, carrying two foreign satellites, from the spaceport of Sriharikota in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh witnessed the historic launch by the state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) , telecast live by local TV channels generating a hysteria across the nation.

"The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has successfully accomplished its mission," ISRO chief announced after the launch around 10 a.m. (local time).

Later addressing the nation, Indian PM hailed the launch of PSLV-C21 which carried a French satellite and a Japanese microsatellite into space. "I congratulate ISRO for the successful launch. The nation's technological prowness is measured in such missions," he said.

This is PSLV's 22nd launch and ISRO's 100th space mission in 49 years.

ISRO has so far built 62 satellites and flown 37 launch vehicles into space. It aims to send another 37 satellites in the next five years.

India is send a mission to Mars next year.
