DPRK won't accept 'negligible' flood aid from South Korea
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-13 15:30

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Wednesday that it will not accept a "negligible" amount of flood aid from South Korea, accusing its neighbor of lacking sincerity, the official news agency KCNA reported Thursday.

"The South Korean counterpart in its notice on Tuesday seriously insulted us again by offering to send a negligible quantity of goods," according to a spokesman for the Central Committee of the DPRK Red Cross Society cited by the KCNA.

"It persistently insisted on disallowing the offer of rice, cement, and equipment for rehabilitation, in particular, claiming that those things can be diverted to other purposes," the spokesman said.

It clearly proved that the South Korea's proposal to offer aid is nothing but a gesture to gain gratitude, using the natural disaster to hit compatriots by making a mockery of the Red Cross' noble spirit of humanitarianism, according to the KCNA.

Pyongyang voiced discontent over Seoul's offer of 10,000 tons of flour, instant noodles and medicine, according to a South Korean official cited by the Yonhap News Agency.

The two sides renewed contact on Sept. 3 via the Red Cross liaison channel at Panmunjom, a border city, to negotiate the South's proposed relief aid to help the North recover from dry spells, heavy rains and typhoons in recent months, which was the first such offer in two years.

State media reported that recent floods in the DPRK left 169 people dead, 400 missing, and 65,280 hectares of land under water as of early August.
