A court in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh Wednesday admitted a defamation case against Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal for his "sexist" remark on women.
The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in the city of Kanpur admitted the petition against the coal minister for his recent comments that "like old victory, old wives give no cause for celebration." He had Tuesday apologized for his remark, saying he was quoted out of context.
The case will come up for hearing on Oct. 8, sources said, adding that if convicted he could face up to two years in prison.
Meanwhile, women members of parliament have also said that they will write to Congress President Sonia Gandhi demanding for action, apart from opposition parties demanding for his resignation.
However, defending his actions, Jaiswal told a TV channel: "I never said anything like that. All I said was that as a marriage grows older, the charm of celebrating it keeps fading. My statement's context should not be twisted. People who are agitating are politicizing it. But still, if anybody is hurt, then I apologize." |
