CPN-Maoist lifts 2-week ban on Indian films in Nepali theaters
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-11 19:51

After two weeks long ban in screening Indian movies in Nepali cinemas, the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) on Thursday lifted all its restrictions imposed on the Indian movies.

According to a press statement issued on Thursday, the ban has been lifted owing to upcoming festive season in Nepal especially the Dashain, which is the biggest festival of Hindu people.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu a week ago had informally asked the CPN-Maoist's chairman Baidhya to cancel the ban.

According to CPN-Maoist spokeswoman PumphaBhusal, the lift on screening Indian movies is temporary.

The move to prohibit Indian movies drew mixed reactions here. Many Nepali cinemas which mostly screen Indian movies incurred losses of 35 million Nepali Rupees within two weeks, said Ashok Sharma, former chairman of Nepal Film Producers Association.

The Minister for Information and Communications Raj KishworeYadav on Oct. 2 has also warned the CPN-Maoist of action if the party continues with the ban.

The CPN-Maoist explains that screening Hindi movies in Nepali theaters would ultimately promote vulgarity, cultural indecency and insecure investment of Nepali film makers.
