South Korea's President-elect Park Geun-hye will meet with a delegation dispatched by Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, Park's aides said Friday.
The meeting between Park and the envoys, scheduled at the request of Japan, will take place on Jan. 4, the aides said.
Park, who takes office early next year, inherits a fraught relationship with the country's former colonial occupier as the two remain at odds over a slew of historical issues.
Park's father, late dictator Park Chung-hee, signed in 1965 a controversial treaty normalizing diplomatic ties with Japan, prompting student protests.
Abe returned to Japan's premiership after his right-wing Liberal Democratic Party won a parliamentary majority in general elections earlier this month. |
