An angry group of Indian Saturday demanded fast justice for the victim of an outrageous gang rape who died in a Singapore hospital after fighting death for 12 days before turning into a real martyr.

Thousands of people, mostly students, took to the streets in Delhi despite government efforts of sealing off the town completely by shutting down subway train stations and barricading thousands of police at all road checkpoints.

Many students wore black ban on their heads and apparently anger and grief stricken about the passing away of the 23-year-old girl, identified as Nirbhaya. They were joined by hundreds of high school teenagers and a lot of adult citizens, said witnesses.

Protests and angry expressions filed social networks. One young woman changed her photo into a black square on her facebook, saying "sad, anger, hatred". Another young woman said it is better to emigrate by herself than by being sent to hospital in Singapore to die by the government.

While the government has appealed for calm and solidarity, the disappointment and frustrations over government and judicial inaction against crimes against women have spilled over more than ever this time.

"Only 26 rapists out of 100 have been convicted, why?" said on poster of the protesters.

The public anger against inaction of police to provide security to ordinary citizens worsened a news reports was released. According to the report, the bus, on which six men brutalize and rape Nirbhaya and beat her boyfriend, has been impounded by police six times in the past two years for attempted assaults on female riders and illegally running on the road without a permit. But each time, the bus was returned to the driver, the brother of the main culprit in the gang rape case, who paid a small amount of money as fines to the police.

The chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dickshit, was barred by protesters from entering a main protest street, Jantar Manta, as angry students blamed her for organizing police crackdown on protests.

The president of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi, meanwhile promised quick and tough punishment for the culprit group, headed by a reportedly cold blooded thug Ram Singh and including a juvenile. " Her fight will not go in vain," an apparently furious Gandhi said in a statement.

Arun Jaitley, a parliamentarian of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, said the death of the girl is a national shame for India and everybody should hang down their head today. The six men, now all in a Delhi jail, lured the girl and her boyfriend into the bus in a residential district in south Delhi on Dec. 16, repeatedly raped and brutalized her before throwing her naked onto a remote road.

Doctors at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore said Nirbhaya died of multi-organic failure after suffering from severe brain damages.
