Indian capital to regularize unauthorized settlements
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-05 17:59

After the horrifying gang rape took place with six thugs hailing from a stinking slum in south Delhi, the local government said it would try to regularize some 200 unauthorized resettlements in the city, also called colonies.

The Press Trusts of India said that a meeting of the Delhi Cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit approved the proposal to regularize the settlements, which have only temporary regularization certificates.

Out of the 205 colonies, officials said 157 colonies came up partly on forest land while 48 settlements have encroached land belonging to Archaeological Survey of India, said the report.

Delhi is known for its old tombs dating from the Mughal area. Many settlements were built around these tombs.
