Pakistan summons Indian envoy over border attack
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-07 21:35

Pakistan on Monday summoned a senior Indian diplomat and lodged protest over Indian forces firing in the disputed Kashmir region, which killed a Pakistani soldier on Sunday morning.

The Pakistan army said that its soldier died and another one injured when Indian troops crossed the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region, in Haji Pir Sector in Bagh district and raided a Pakistani check post.

"The Deputy High Commissioner of India was called to the Foreign Office today and handed over a protest note on the unprovoked Indian attack on a Pakistani post," the Foreign Ministry said.

"The Indian government was strongly urged to take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future," a ministry statement said.

The Pakistani army said that the border troops effectively responded and repulsed the attack successfully and that the Indian army while retreating left behind a gun and a dagger.

Pakistan and India declared ceasefire along the LoC in November 2003. Guns have been relatively silent since then, however border forces sometimes trade fire.

It was the first cross-LoC firing in the new year.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars, two over Kashmir, since their independence in 1947.
