Indian Army chief refutes Pakistan's allegations of unprovoked firing in Kashmir
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-17 09:00

Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh Wednesday defended his troops and rejected outright Pakistan 's charges that one of its soldiers was killed in "unprovoked firing" at the international border in the disputed territory of Kashmir, known as Line of Control (LoC).

General Singh said that his troops have neither crossed the LoC nor fired indiscriminately at Pakistani troops, as both Indian Army and Pakistani Army blame each other for initiating the recent aggression at the border, which triggered clashes in which both sides lost two soldiers each.

"Our jawans (troops) don't cross the LoC. We honor human rights. We fire in retaliation when provoked," General Singh told the media in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Army chief said that the Pakistani soldier might have been killed during cross-firing along the LoC. "These are normal activities that take place at the LoC. We have retaliated in response to cross-firing," he said, while visiting the family of one of the soldiers killed in the clashes.

India has termed as "brutal" and "unacceptable" the killing of two of its soldiers at the border allegedly by Pakistani Army during the recent ceasefire violations. One of the soldiers was even beheaded.

Pakistan denies the charges.
