Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Wednesday that he will meet with Singaporean counterpart K. Shanmugam next week to discuss the way to push for the membership of Timor Leste in ASEAN, media reported.

Natalegawa made the statement after meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao at the State Palace.

"On next Thursday I will visit Singapore, one of the points to be discussed with Singaporean foreign minister is this issue (the membership)," Natalegawa said.

The minister reaffirmed that Indonesia fully supports the Timor Leste membership, as it is expected to boost stability in the region.

"It is clear that the future of Southeast Asia is not going to be positive, prosperous and stable should Timor Leste not be part of big family of ASEAN. Therefore Indonesia keeps pushing membership of Timor Leste in ASEAN," said Natalegawa.

To meet the goal, Indonesia has given assistance in the form of capacity building to Timor Leste to prepare the country to the membership, he said, adding a consensus is required among all ASEAN member countries to support the new membership in ASEAN.

President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Xanana discussed in their talks the ways to settle border areas and intention to step up bilateral ties to a higher level, according to the minister.

Indonesia and Timor Leste share the Sumbawa island. The new nation had been for 24 years under Indonesia's rule before its independence in May 2002.

Xanana's visit to Jarkata also includes attending the Jarkata International Defense Dialogue 2013, said Natalegawa.
