An Indian billionaire and politician-cum-real estate tycoon was shot dead Tuesday at his farmhouse in the national capital by two unidentified gunmen, a senior police official said.

"The two gunmen, suspected to be contract killers, drove into the 62-year-old Deepak Bhardwaj's farmhouse at Rajokri near the border with the suburb of Gurgaon this morning and fired three shots at him. The politician, who was the richest candidate during the 2009 general elections, was declared brought dead at a nearby army hospital," he said on condition of anonymity.

The two killers managed to enter his farmhouse on the pretext of booking it for a wedding, the official said, adding that two of Bhardwaj's aides suffered bullet injuries while trying to chase away the killers.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police Chief Neeraj Kumar told the media that close circuit television cameras installed at the farmhouse have captured footage of the car and the attackers. "We hope to arrest the killers soon," he said.
