Moscow was concerned over the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula and did not accept Pyongyang's "provocative and belligerent" behavior, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

Russia, along with its Group of Eight (G8) partners, expressed concern over the development on the Korean Peninsula, spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on the eve of a G8 foreign ministers' meeting in London.

However he said: "We are also categorically against using the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s actions as a pretext for massive military beef-up in Northeast Asia, pumping weapons into that region."

Meanwhile, the deployment of anti-missile defense systems and other actions were obviously spilling beyond the neutralization of threat created by the DPRK nuclear-missile programs, he added.

"Political and diplomatic efforts should not be stopped as they are the only alternative to a threat of deep perturbation in Northeast Asia."

Following the nuclear test by the DPRK in February, the United States responded with economic sanctions and a recent show of force by sending nuclear-capable stealth B-2 bombers and F-22 fighters to participate in the military exercises with South Korea.

The DPRK reacted by cutting off military hotlines and declaring a "state of war" with South Korea, and threatening to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S. targets.
