ASEAN leaders stress ASEAN centrality, co-op

Southeast Asian leaders on Thursday discussed and stressed the importance of ASEAN centrality in the regional architecture during the last day of the 22nd ASEAN Summit.

The summit, under the theme "Our People, Our Future Together", kicked off at the Prime Minister's Office complex here Wednesday night, where leaders of the 10 member states congregated to push ahead with ASEAN Community building efforts and to strengthen the group's external relations with dialogue partners.

The leaders reiterated the significance of ASEAN's central role in evolving regional political, security and economic architecture, and reaffirmed the commitment to work closely with all dialogue partners through various ASEAN-led mechanisms, the Chairman's Statement of the 22nd ASEAN Summit said.

They also welcomed external partners to enhance cooperation with ASEAN to ensure the maintenance of peace, security, stability and prosperity in the region.

Established in 1967, ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
