Tremors hit northern India, including the national capital, on Wednesday following a moderate earthquake near the international border with Pakistan, a senior official said.
"Tremors were felt in parts of northern India at 12.30 p.m. ( local time) after an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit the India-Pakistan border in the disputed territory of Kashmir. The epicenter of the quake was somewhere in Kashmir. However, there have been no reports of any casualty or damage to property," he said, on condition of anonymity.
Local TV channels showed footage of panicky people coming out of their offices and homes in the national capital, the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla, and the central- government controlled territory of Chandigarh where tremors were felt for nearly 10 seconds.
This is the third in the series of tremors that hit northern India in the past one month.
However, the U.S. Geological Survey revised the earthquake as 5. 4 on the Richter scale and said that the epicenter, with a depth of 9.80 km, was initially determined to be at 33.1002 degrees north latitude and 75.8377 degrees east longitude.
