The Philippine government is closely monitoring the oil leak near the Pasig River in Manila, a government official said Sunday, dismissing any concerns over the safety of President Benigno Aquino III or those in the Presidential Palace.

"We are monitoring the incident, but so far no reason to be concerned," Presidential Security Group (PSG) Commander Brigadier General Ramon Mateo Dizon said on Sunday.

The official residence of President Aquino III is located along the Pasig River inside the PSG Compound in Malacanang Complex, the Presidential Palace.

Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte said in a radio interview on Sunday that the Manila local government is on top of the situation and had immediately attended to the incident including those who felt ill after the incident.

The Manila government has been exerting efforts to swiftly remove the oil spill in Pasig River, Valte added.

An approximately 100 liters of bunker oil was discovered at around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Sta. Ana and Pandacan side of the Pasig River in Manila after residents in nearby area complained about the foul odor late Saturday night, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

Reports said an elder couple had been rushed to the hospital due to difficulty in breathing following the oil leak.

The Marine Environmental Protection Unit is now conducting investigation into the incident and was directed to get samples of oil, the PCG said.
